Fusing ELA and Science
Role: Curriculum Writer
Challenge: Early literacy and reading skills need to be taught in content area lessons to support dual language acquisition in first graders in both ESL and dual language classrooms.
Solution: Design 5E lesson cycle that centered on a science mentor text, ELA standard and phonics review.
Tools: Powerpoint, Google Slides, Google Classroom LMS

Standards Alignment
One way to streamline alignment is to unpack a standard into actionable sections. I led weekly PLC meets where I was able to collaborate with my team and leaders, to ensure that standards and lessons were aligned.

Design and Development
I began by picking a mentor text that would teach the science concept, the ELA spiraled standard, and the phonics concept. I then found vocabulary necessary for all components. Using the mentor text as the foundation of each lesson I mapped out each using the 5E lesson model to teach each science standard. After, I designed all digital and printable components of each lesson.

Instruction and Evaluation
I met back with my team to discuss the data from the week’s lesson in a PLC meeting. Analysis of mastery for each standard was then used to plan future lessons and spiral standards.
